I’m a fan of Logan McKenna and this series and Stone Cold is a great addition. Logan volunteers to work with a retired cop on a group of cold case murder files when a long-dead body is unearthed during construction of a new housing development. The skeleton is Brooke, a 16-year-old girl who went missing thirty years ago. This leads Logan and her cop mentor on a quest to find her killer, even while they still track threads of the other cold cases in the file. The investigation has a series of twists until Logan is sure they know who killed Brooke — but proving it 30 years later isn’t easy. The investigation is detailed and suspenseful, while maintaining the Logan McKenna charm and personality we love about this series. Readers will be glued to their books and guessing along with Logan as the mystery unfolds. It’s a tight, satisfying story well worth any mystery fan’s time. The writing is clean and engaging, which enhances the read.
This story weaves together both the hunt for a long-lost killer who got away with murder and the anxiety and sometimes mixed emotions of the surviving family members, who are not sure whether their loved one ran away, died accidentally, or was murdered. Having closure isn’t always what you wanted, and sometimes, your worst fears are not realized, but they produce new, raw, emotions. Ms. Davisson captures all this in a compelling narrative.
(I was a Beta reader for this book and received a final copy from the author. These thoughts are my own honest evaluation.)
